About West Santa Cruz

West Santa Cruz or the “west side” is known for the University of California - Santa Cruz, Natural Bridges State Park, the Pogonip greenbelt, Cowell’s Beach, Steamers Lane, and West Cliff Drive, to name a few. Santa Cruz is divided into East and West sections by the San Lorenzo River that flows from the Santa Cruz Mountains and out to sea. The main downtown area of the City of Santa Cruz as well as the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park will fall into their own area since they are arguably on the border between East and West but if you are searching on the MLS, they fall into West Santa Cruz, or Area 43. West Santa Cruz is locally divided into two sections, the Upper West Side and the Lower West Side.

The Upper West Side is known for having homes on larger lots and many have panoramic ocean views. The Upper West Side is thought to include the homes on Escalona Drive and above but some argue that the dividing line is Mission Street. The Upper West Side is home to the University of California – Santa Cruz, which is one of ten campuses in the University of California system. It was founded in 1965 and covers over 2,000 acres of forested hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. UCSC is known as a modern research university and its strong student political activism. The UCSC campus is adjacent to the Pogonip greenbelt area, a 640 acre coastal terrace prairie, with 8 miles of trails that provide for excellent hiking, walking, and running. The 1987 film, The Lost Boys, featured scenes filmed in Pogonip and also at the Beach Boardwalk. The Westlake neighborhood of the Upper West Side is well known for its Westlake Park, located off of Bradley Street, which includes a large pond, picnic tables, and lawn area. The Upper West Side is also home to the highly rated Westlake Elementary School, an expansive area of townhomes called University Terrace, and UCSC’s Arboretum, a research and teaching facility dedicated to plant conservation. The Arboretum has picnic areas located throughout the gardens and guided tours are available.

The Lower West Side is the flatter, more “beachy” neighborhood in West Santa Cruz. One border is Natural Bridges, a 65-acre State Park and State Beach, named for its natural mudstone bridges that were carved by the Pacific Ocean into cliffs that extended into the sea. The park is also known for its Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve, which is the home of up to 150,000 Monarch Butterflies from October through early February. Many homes on the Lower West Side are walking distance to West Cliff Drive, which is a 2.5 mile coastal road along scenic cliffs overlooking the Monterey Bay and it is great for jogging, biking, and sightseeing. One neighborhood on the Lower West Side is called “The Circles,” and can easily be identified on an aerial map as the cluster of homes centered on an innermost turnabout. The smallest and most central street is Errett Circle and each of the following streets, Wilkes Circle, and Walk Circle become respectively larger. These homes on average are small beach cottages and the lot sizes tend to get bigger on the outermost part of the circle. Lighthouse Field State Beach is a protected beach area encompassing 38 acres and overlooks the well-known Steamer Lane surfing hot spot. It also contains the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, housed in the 1967 Mark Abbot Memorial Lighthouse. Bay View Elementary is located on the Lower West Side and like Westlake Elementary, it is part of the Santa Cruz City School District. Another popular feature of the Lower West Side is the Swift Street Courtyard, a group of local businesses dedicated to sustainable local production. There are restaurants and small retail shops and it is a great place to sample some local wines as well as organic beer. Pacific Collegiate Charter School (grades 7-12) is also located on Swift Street and was recently ranked the number 1 charter school in the state and number 11 in the United States by US News & World Report in 2013. Another favorite attraction of the Lower West Side is the UCSC affiliated Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Lab where visitors can experience sea life and exhibits.

Downtown Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Downtown Santa Cruz is the heart of the City of Santa Cruz. One of the main focal points of downtown is the Clock Tower, which overlooks the pedestrian friendly main drag of Pacific Avenue. Pacific Avenue and its cross streets make up a vibrant area of local boutiques, sidewalk cafes, art galleries, multiple movie theaters, night clubs, and coffee shops. The downtown area has public art displayed and hosts monthly antique street fairs as well as a First Friday Art Tour, which is a great way to see local art and explore the social scene. Visitors and residents alike enjoy stopping by the Museum of Art and History or attending performances by the Santa Cruz Symphony, Actors’ Theatre, and annual events such as the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, which takes place at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Santa Cruz Middle School and Santa Cruz High are both located relatively close to the downtown area. A new addition to the downtown area is the Kaiser Permanente Arena, which hosts The Santa Cruz Warriors, Santa Cruz’s own NBA Developmental League for the Golden State Warriors. The Kaiser Permanente Arena hosts other special events as well as another favorite sport league, the Santa Cruz Derby Girls.

As you continue to make your way down Pacific Avenue towards the ocean, you will eventually make your way to one of Santa Cruz’s most notable and famous landmarks, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, California’s oldest seaside amusement park. The Boardwalk was founded in 1907 and consists of a 24 acre park located along Santa Cruz’s Main Beach at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River and is a California Historical Landmark. Visitors can drive to the Boardwalk and park or an even more spectacular way to access the park is riding The Santa Cruz Big Trees and Pacific Railway, which departs from Roaring Camp in Felton and arrives in the middle of Beach Street in front of the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk has a conference and event center called the Cocoanut Grove, which consists of the Grand Ballroom and the Sun Room that make over 20,000 square feet of space. Additionally, the Boardwalk includes Neptune’s Kingdom, a nautical-themed entertainment center open year round that includes an indoor miniature golf course, a large arcade, and a laser tag arena. Another famous landmark nearby is the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, which stretches out a half-mile into the Monterey Bay. The wharf has many family-owned seafood restaurants, gift boutiques, wine tasting, boat rentals, and offers a great view of the Boardwalk and the coastline. The wharf is also a great place to watch the sea lions and year round volleyball players that fill the sand volley ball courts that line Main Beach. At the opposite end of the downtown area, where Highway 17 and Highway 1 intersect, one of the main entrances to the downtown area is by way of River Street, where River Street appropriately parallels the San Lorenzo River. Heading North, River Street turns into Highway 9, which is the very scenic highway that runs through the Santa Cruz Mountains all the way to Saratoga. At the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 9 is one of Santa Cruz’s more industrial areas. Neighboring the industrial area, which is home to Costco and several large home and yard supply stores is Harvey West Park, which is great day-use 50 acre Municipal Park that contains a swimming pool, softball fields, hiking trails, and picnic areas. The Old Sash Mill is also in this same vicinity and is a mixed use commercial park consisting of several small businesses. The Old Sash Mill was rehabilitated in 1973 from its original use as a saw, planning, and Sash Mill originally constructed in 1906.

Ocean Street

Ocean Street is the main thoroughfare for weekend beachgoers to get from Highway 1 down to the Boardwalk area. Ocean Street is known for its many motels, inns, and entertaining people watching. A major land mark on Ocean Street is the County Court House and County Building where many county services and departments are located. Hotel Paradox is one of the newest additions to Ocean Street and took the place of what once was the Holiday Inn and thereafter known as the University Inn since it was most recently used for additional UCSC housing before becoming Hotel Paradox. Hotel Paradox and its Solaire Restaurant is an upscale and trendy hotel with a great pool scene and conference facilities. San Lorenzo Park is located behind Hotel Paradox and has a nice pond that is popular for duck feeding and connects to a river walk trail that follows the San Lorenzo River and has a footbridge connecting to the downtown area. Other noteworthy restaurants in this area are the Hindquarter Bar & Grill and Restaurante Italiano.
